| Description |
|
| This type of broccoli likes to grow in the early spring, late summer, or early fall. Sow broccoli seeds outdoors four to six weeks before the average last frost if youre planting a spring crop, and in late summer for fall harvesting. Like all broccoli, DeCicco grows best between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and can tolerate temperatures as low as 20 degrees. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/8 inch deep in groups of six every 18 inches. Space rows 18 to 24 inches apart.
Water soil regularly so it stays evenly moist until the seeds germinate in seven to 14 days. Broccoli needs 1 to 2 inches of water weekly. Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture, but don’t let the mulch touch the stems because it can burn the plants. Water the ground under the plants and not the broccoli itself to make it less susceptible to soil-borne diseases.
Thin the broccoli to one every 18 inches when the plants are 2 inches tall.
Continue the watering schedule to keep the soil moist during the growing season, but cut back on watering as the broccoli reaches maturity in 48 to 70 days.
Feed the broccoli with an additional side dressing of compost in the middle of its growing season.
Harvest the main broccoli head when it’s 3 inches in diameter to encourage more side florets.
